The Dallas Mavericks have been in search of a new GM since firing Nico Harrison earlier this season. They decided to part ways with him after the disastrous Luka Doncic trade. That trade is widely seen as the worst trade in NBA history.

In fact, the new regime decided to trade Anthony Davis already to purge themselves of that mistake. Now, they are looking to build a new team around Cooper Flagg. They will not be making the playoffs this season, so they are already looking forward to the offseason.

According to a report from NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs might be looking to poach top GMs from other teams.

Dallas Mavericks Are Reportedly Trying to Poach a Top GM

Stein specifically mentions Brad Stevens, Sam Presti, and Tim Connelly as some of the candidates they would go after. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, one of those three candidates would listen to an offer from Dallas. That would really help accelerate their rebuild.

The Mavericks are an attractive job to take. The fans in Dallas would instantly love the new guy more than Harrison because of that trade. He also clearly has a lot of freedom, as Patrick Dumont let that trade happen. That means the new GM could essentially do what they wanted.

It would be very hard for Dallas to add any one of these GMs. All of them are in good situations. Yet, it seems as though the Mavericks are prepared to offer a lot of money to any one of those candidates. It’s also unclear which of them would seriously consider an offer.

Haynes indicated that one of them would listen, but his source would not tell him who. Regardless of which one it is, all three of those executives are very strong. Whoever takes the job will be tasked with building around Cooper Flagg.

A New Dallas GM Will Need to Build Around Cooper Flagg

Flagg is the franchise player that the Mavericks will be building around now that Doncic is in Los Angeles. The new GM that comes in will need to have a plan ready to build around him. With Kyrie Irving returning next season, they should be better already.

This year, the Mavericks have the third-worst offense in the league. A lot of that stems from the fact that they don’t have a point guard who can organize the team. Jason Kidd started the year by playing Flagg at the point guard spot, and that did not work out.

Whoever the new GM is needs to build a team that can work well with Flagg. He is already the best player on the team as a rookie, and he will only get better. Dallas is hoping to get some lottery luck again and get one of the top four picks in the draft.

It’s unclear at this point what the potential offer would be from Dallas to one of these great candidates. Whatever it is, it will likely be massive.
