Fashion Icons & Their Styles

MARY BETH SHIMMON

WHO

Arts patron and advocate Mary Beth Shimmon (@sfmbs) devotes her time to supporting local organizations like the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor. She’s on the board of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and is chairing this summer’s Festival Napa Valley 20th anniversary Arts for All Gala.

BECAUSE

Fashion is about having fun, and no one is having more fun than Shimmon. She buys clothing she absolutely loves, from classic pieces to modern avant-garde looks, and trusts that the right occasion will arise for each item. She embraces color, print and Miuccia Prada’s “ugly chic” and never wants to look like anyone else.

SEEN WEARING

A pretty Valentino gown that happened to perfectly match the invite to the San Francisco Opera Ball with a vintage Ben Amun coin necklace sourced from her favorite Michigan-based boutique, Leah’s Closet; Wes Gordon for Carolina Herrera; Raf Simmons; and Sean McGirr for Alexander McQueen.

KEN FULK + KURT WOOTTON

WHO

Our Modern Luxury Interiors cover star, Ken Fulk (@kenfulk), recently breathed new life into The Huntington Hotel and the famed Nob Hill Spa. From Mankas in Inverness to the Beverly Hills Hotel, the design guru is in demand, but he hasn’t forgotten about his hometown—and also refreshed The Battery. His business and life partner, Kurt Wootton (@kurtandreww), is equally stylish.

BECAUSE

No one looks better walking a pack of golden retrievers than this dynamic duo. Everyone wants Ken and Kurt at their parties because they bring good times. The couple dresses up every day, and Fulk’s mantra would be “dress up and show up!” They believe the clothes make the man and that looking good makes you feel good and forces others to treat you differently.

SEEN WEARING

On Ken: A Thom Browne toile blazer, shirt and tie, and vintage Dior tuxedo pants. On Kurt: Thom Browne silk shantung blazer, shirt and shorts with a Dolce & Gabbana neck scarf and Tom Ford glasses. They both love Thom Browne, while Ken enjoys Tom Ford-era Gucci and YSL, and Kurt loves Italian labels Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.

PETRA HIGBY

WHO

As the co-founder and CEO of The Caviar Co., Petra Higby (@petrahigby) jets from her Cow Hollow boutique to Kathy Hilton’s annual PJ party, all while looking effortlessly fabulous. You have Higby to thank for the caviar that’s everywhere; she’s supplied chefs and taught them that everything from deviled eggs to fried chicken is better with caviar. She’s also single-handedly made National Caviar Day (July 18) one of the city’s coolest annual parties.

BECAUSE

The mother of two is chic, sophisticated and friendly. Her style is a blend of classic heritage and elegant luxury. She frequently wears bold, artful statement pieces that pair timeless couture with fashion-forward elements. Polished? Yes. Predictable? Never.

SEEN WEARING

Tom Ford dress, Valentino shoes and Judith Leiber bag. She also loves Libertine, Chanel, Loewe, Chloé, Khaite, Rabanne jeans, Chanel bags, Jimmy Choo shoes, Alice + Olivia, A.L.C. skirts and Bottega Veneta shoes.

WHO

He may be a retired graphic designer, but Calvin Hom (@thesartorialcalvin) is working it with his looks. The host with the most and man about town is a champion of the arts and Asian American communities.

BECAUSE

He looks wildly chic in black layers, often pairing them with statement jackets. He paints his nails, rocks wild sunglasses and parades around Chinatown, where he’s a local legend.

SEEN WEARING

Yohji Yamamoto blazer, Jil Sander shirt and jewelry by The Soloist, Detaj, King Baby and HiHo Silver. Other brands he loves include Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, Thom Browne, Maison Margiela, Valentino, Ziggy Chen and Forme de Expression.
