Student survey aims to gauge needs for student financial literacy at TROY


A group of professors in the Sorrell College of Business are launching a survey targeting Troy University students’ knowledge of personal financial literacy.

The survey results will help tailor personal finance educational resources being provided by Regions Bank, marking the bank’s first-ever association with a university.

Dr. Lane Boyte Chadwick, Dr. Anand Krishnamoorthy and Dr. Dewey Todd are spearheading the effort to gain information from 1,000 students from all disciplines and all campuses.

“As part of Financial Literacy Month, we are launching a university-wide initiative at Troy University to better understand our students’ financial knowledge, confidence, and areas where additional support is needed,” Chadwick said. “In partnership with Regions Bank, this initiative will directly guide the creation of targeted, practical resources tailored to our students’ needs.”

Chadwick said once the survey is complete, all TROY students will have access to the training modules.

“This isn’t simply a data collection effort – it’s a listening tool. The results will be used to: develop tailored financial literacy resources, create relevant workshops and webinars, provide students with practical tools related to budgeting, credit, and financial decision-making, and strengthen our ability to support student success both during and after their time at Troy University,” she said.

Students will be emailed invitations to participate in the survey, and faculty members have been asked to share the survey link in Canvas classes, announcements and to mention it to their students during classes, whether online or in-person.

“Our students are making real financial decisions every day, often without the resources or confidence they need. This initiative allows us to respond directly to their identified needs, rather than relying on assumptions,” Chadwick said.

The survey is anonymous and carries the approval of the Institutional Research Board.
