This type of event, often linked to what scientists call Saharan dust, can tint the sky red, orange or yellow depending on particle concentration and light conditions.

The phenomenon did not occur in isolation. It coincided with a powerful storm system, widely reported as Storm Erminio, which brought gale-force winds, heavy rainfall and flooding, and travel disruption across multiple regions.

While the visuals may look surreal, the event had serious consequences on the ground.
Per reports, at least one person died in flooding near Athens, homes and infrastructure were damaged, flights were delayed or diverted due to low visibility, and air quality worsened due to high dust concentrations.
