BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One-by-one models presented themselves on the runway at UAB’s “Every Body Blooms” disability centered fashion show Thursday evening.
“Everybody does bloom literally, but also we control how that looks when we’re tapped into our power,” said Creative Director Daniel Grier.
One of the models featured, Alabama native and double amputee Noah Galloway, lost his left arm and left leg in the Iraq War.

“I look at not only myself but all these other models, and it’s an opportunity for us to do something that we may not feel like that’s a world we fit into. But there’s nothing that should hold us back from anything. So, getting to do this is a huge honor and then I think it’s good for the community,” said Galloway.
The mission of the free event, presented by UAB’s National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability, is to showcase those with disabilities.
Dr. James Rimmer, Associate Director of Rehabilitation Medicine, said it’s important to do to change the narrative of those who often experience societal limitations.
“When you work in a disability profession, it’s very important to not only use research as a platform to improve and increase inclusion, but it’s also very important to get that human experience. We have a society today that still holds a lot of societal barriers towards people with disabilities, and this is a good example of how to overcome that,” said Dr. Rimmer.
