The City of Gainesville has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2026 adopted budget. The national recognition of excellence affirms the quality of the city’s budget as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication tool that meets the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
Developed over several months under the direction of the Gainesville City Commission, the budget is the result of a comprehensive, citywide effort to align priorities, resources and services through a structured and transparent work process. Sections for each department are packed with financial reporting and detailed descriptions of ongoing operational needs paired with deeper dives into long-range investments in infrastructure, housing, public safety and community programs.
“Each annual budget reflects the values of our community,” said Interim City Manager Andrew Persons. “This one came from months of thoughtful work across the organization to prioritize services, make informed spending decisions and keep the city functional and moving forward in a real and practical way.”
Highlights from the Fiscal Year 2026 budget include planned investment in street and sidewalk improvements, upgrades to public facilities and parks, continued access to youth and recreation programs, and funding to support essential services such as fire rescue, emergency response and community health outreach. It also maintains financial stability as the city continues adjusting to funding changes connected to the separation from Gainesville Regional Utilities.
The city’s Office of Management and Budget, which played a central role in preparing the award-winning document, also was honored with a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Preparation.
“Budgets for municipalities are complex documents,” said Office of Management and Budget Director Allison Teslia. “Earning this award is meaningful. It shows we worked through layers of data to uphold our duty to the taxpayers. We account for every dollar in day-to-day operations and provide insight into the strategic direction of the city organization.”
Gainesville is among more than 1,900 governments participating in GFOA’s Budget Awards Program, which highlights organizations that demonstrate best practices in public budgeting and serve as models for communities across North America.
