Isaac Paredes out at least 3 games on bereavement list

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Houston Astros placed infielder Isaac Paredes on the bereavement list prior to Friday’s series opener against the A’s, the team announced.

A player can remain on the MLB’s bereavement list for a period of three to seven days. The minimum of three days means Paredes will miss the three-game series against the A’s, at least. Manager Joe Espada did not indicate Friday afternoon the number of days Paredes might miss.

“We’re going to give Paredes some time here to deal with his family, and when he gets back we’ll (welcome) him with open arms,” Espada said.

Infielder Shay Whitcomb was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to replace Paredes on Houston’s active roster.

Paredes played in six games on the Astros’ opening homestand and is 5-for-22 with five RBIs, starting at third base, second base and designated hitter.

Whitcomb was 8-for-26 with two home runs in his first six games this season at Triple-A. The right-handed hitter has played in 40 major-league games over the last two seasons with a .178/.231/.260 slash line. Whitcomb has played all four infield positions and corner outfield at Triple-A.
