“When we go out, we stay alert,” a student said, capturing the quiet vigilance shaping teenage life, as youths and experts gathered at an event organized by Kathimerini on Thursday at the 3rd High School of Kifissia.
The discussion focused on youth delinquency, seeking to understand its causes and identify effective responses. Specialists and students spoke, alongside Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis.
Teenagers described bullying, insults and fights, often dismissed as jokes that “hurt” when only one laughs. Witnesses said they freeze, fearing they could become targets.
Students urged peer intervention, though victims often feel exposed or punished when adults step in. Those without friend groups, or with disabilities, are more vulnerable.
Officials outlined measures including youth policing units, a hotline and an app for rapid response. Local authorities cited patrols, surveillance and sports initiatives. Experts warned delinquency reflects a fraying social fabric, calling for mediation, school psychologists and stronger community support, while linking violence to unexpressed distress.
