INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WCHS) — Former Marshall basketball player and National Basketball Association coach Mike D’Antoni has been announced as a member of the 2026 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class.
The Class of 2026 announcement was made on Saturday in Indianapolis prior to the men’s college basketball Final Four games.
D’Antoni, a native of Mullens, W.Va., spent 1970-1973 with the Thundering Herd before embarking on an 18-year playing career in the NBA and internationally.
Following his retirement as a player in 1990, D’Antoni began a coaching career that spanned from 1990 until 2021, again in both the NBA and internationally. He had head coaching stints with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets, as well as multiple assistant and associate head coach positions.
D’Antoni is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2017, and his No. 10 was retired by the Marshall Thundering Herd. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a contributor.
According to a release from the NBA, D’Antoni will be inducted alongside referee Joey Crawford, coaches Mark Few and Doc Rivers and player Amar’e Stoudemire from the men’s committee, as well as the 1996 United States Women’s National Team and players Elena Delle Donne, Chamique Holdsclaw and Candace Parker from the women’s committee.
