A former finance manager at a Bracknell GP practice received a jail sentence of slightly more than 3 years for stealing approximately £456,000 over 3 years.
Lauren Millington, 43, from St. Mary’s Road, Hook, Hampshire, received a sentence of three years and two months at the Reading Crown Court.
Roger Happe, 44, from Alexander Road, Egham, Surrey, received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He also received a community order of 100 hours’ service.
On Jan. 7, Millington pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of concealing or transferring criminal property. On Feb. 3, Happe pleaded guilty to one count of acquisition and possession of criminal property. Both were arrested on Jan. 15, 2025, and charged on Dec. 4, 2025.
Millington served as a finance manager at The Waterfield Practice, Bracknell, from February 2021 to November 2024, and during this period stole more than £456,666.
It emerged that she manipulated the bank accounts of various companies by altering their information to have payments sent to her.
Happe also had an account through which he helped transfer £25,190.57 of criminal money.
The case began when the Waterfield Practice suspected some strange dealings with their payments to medical suppliers outside the company.
“This was a calculated and sustained fraud in which Lauren Millington abused positions of trust to divert substantial sums of money for personal gain,” said DC Jagdip Sekhon of the Volume Fraud Team, Berkshire.
According to the investigation, the fraud involved manipulating the company’s systems, issuing false invoices, and using personal bank accounts to conceal the transactions over an extended period.
“The fraud significantly impacted the company, leaving it short to provide essential support to the community it serves,” said Sekhon.
According to DI Duncan Wynn of the Central Fraud Unit, the fraud involved two distinct periods where Millington abused the trust of her employers.
“I hope that the length of sentence imposed will act as a deterrent to others and demonstrate our commitment to pursue fraudsters and bring them to justice on behalf of victims,” Wynn said.
