Greek Parliament
The Greek government is facing a political crisis following the OPEC+ scandal, which is linked to allegations of abuse of European Union agricultural subsidies. The case involves irregular distribution of funds and questionable declarations of aid benefits, while investigations are underway by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
According to a report by Newsbomb.gr, after the file was sent to Parliament, two current ministers and a deputy minister, whose names are included in the investigation, are expected to resign and be replaced within the same day.
They are Giannis Kefalogiannis, Kostas Tsiaras and Dimitris Vartzopoulos. Their replacements are expected to be sworn in on Friday, while no major government reshuffle is expected.
At the government headquarters, Maximos, the situation is considered sensitive, while government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis described the issue as a serious development and stressed that each case will be examined separately.
Meanwhile, the procedure for lifting immunity is expected to continue for 11 New Democracy MPs, while an additional file includes a former minister and a former deputy minister of Agriculture, within the framework of the law on ministerial responsibility.
According to the report, not all those involved have the same level of responsibility: some are suspected of direct involvement, while others are only mentioned in the wiretaps included in the investigation.
Political tensions are expected to increase in the coming days, as the opposition is expected to demand the establishment of a parliamentary investigative commission and question the government’s sustainability, while the issue is taking on broader political and institutional dimensions.
