The Phoenix Suns received a key boost Monday after the NBA rescinded a technical foul assessed to Dillon Brooks, ensuring his availability for a critical late-season game.
In an official statement, the league confirmed that the double technical fouls issued to Brooks and Mac McClung during Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bulls were overturned following review.
“The technical fouls on Dillon Brooks (PHX) and Mac McClung (CHI) issued with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter on April 5 have been rescinded upon league office review,” the NBA said.
The decision has immediate implications for Phoenix, as Brooks had initially been assessed his 18th technical foul of the season — a threshold that would have triggered an automatic one-game suspension.
Dillon Brooks Avoids Suspension at Key Moment
With the technical rescinded, Brooks will be available when the Suns host the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, a game with playoff implications.
Under NBA rules, players are suspended after accumulating 16 technical fouls in a season, with additional suspensions issued for every two technical fouls thereafter. Brooks had already served a one-game suspension earlier this year after receiving his 16th technical foul in February.
The reversal keeps Brooks active in the rotation as Phoenix looks to solidify its postseason positioning.
Mercurial Forward Delivers in Suns’ Win
Before the league’s decision, Brooks’ technical had overshadowed a strong performance in Phoenix’s 120-110 victory over Chicago.
He finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes, contributing on both ends during a decisive fourth-quarter stretch.
Brooks helped ignite an 11-2 closing run, hitting a turnaround jumper and later a 3-pointer to push the Suns ahead. He also delivered a key defensive sequence, blocking multiple attempts on one possession before Devin Booker extended the lead with a 3-pointer.
Booker led Phoenix with 30 points as the Suns snapped a brief two-game skid.
Technical Foul Reversed After NBA Official Review
The technical was originally assessed with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter following an on-court exchange between Brooks and McClung. Officials issued double technicals at the time, pushing Brooks to what was initially recorded as his 18th of the season.
Following league review, however, both technicals were rescinded and removed from the official record.
Phoenix Suns Still Chasing Playoff Position
The timing of the decision is significant for Phoenix, which remains in the hunt for an automatic playoff berth.
The Suns have secured a spot in the play-in tournament but are still chasing the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference. Entering the final stretch of the regular season, they trail the Minnesota Timberwolves by three games with four contests remaining.
Having Brooks available provides added defensive intensity and depth for a team navigating injuries and lineup adjustments.
Since returning from a left-hand fracture last week, Brooks has averaged 12.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists over three games.
Stability — But Still a Risk
The league’s decision removes an immediate suspension concern, allowing Phoenix to maintain continuity in its rotation heading into a key matchup.
Without the reversal, the Suns would have likely relied more heavily on players such as Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen to fill the void.
