THE FOLLOWING IS A DANVILLE AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE RELEASE
DANVILLE – Danville Area Community College has redesigned its Applied Computer Science Associate in Applied Science degree to align with today’s AI-driven workforce – giving students a clear path into high-demand, technology focused careers.
As artificial intelligence reshapes how work gets done, DACC’s program focuses on how data, cloud computing, automation, and AI function together in real-world environments. The result is a curriculum built not just for relevance – but for momentum.
“AI is changing everything,” said Professor Kathy Hunter, Applied Computer Science. “Students need to understand how to work with it, build with it, and adapt as it evolves. That’s what this program delivers.”
Students begin with core skills in Python programming, web development, databases, and cloud computing, alongside early exposure to AI concepts and ethical considerations. From there, they tailor their coursework in high-demand areas including Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, DevOps (cloud-based solutions), Software Development, and Game Design.
The demand for these skills continues to grow. IT jobs are projected to increase by 31% through 2030, with average starting salaries around $65,000—and the potential to reach six figures. For many students, an Associate in Applied Science degree offers a faster path into the workforce without sacrificing opportunity.
“This is not a theory-first program,” Hunter said. “Students build skills they can use immediately – in the workplace or as they continue their education.”
Regionally, the program stands apart. Few community colleges in downstate or central Illinois offer this level of applied training in AI, data engineering, cloud development, and DevOps.
“We are building a program around where technology is going – not where it has been,” Hunter added. “Students shouldn’t have to leave the region to access this level of opportunity. With these updates, now they don’t!”
Graduates are prepared for roles such as data analyst, database technician, DevOps support technician, software developer, and web developer, with select transfer options available for those who choose to pursue them.
