Alaïa Elevates Denim With a Couture Approach to Jeans

Estimated read time2 min read

When it comes to elegant, unexpected style statements, Alaïa has always had your back. Now the legendary French fashion house also has your backside.

Enter Alaïa denim, a range of six cuts including bootcut, fit-and-flare, wide leg, skinny, straight leg, and barrel (above), which the brand calls “round.” All the pants are made in Japan with rope-dyed indigo and treated with texturizing techniques like hand-washing and sanding, shaving, and laser cutting. Colorways run the spectrum from a super-faded vintage wash to a “deep sea blue” that borders on navy.

To launch the line, the Paris-based label enlisted 24-year-old Dutch model Mona Tougaard and photographer Sam Rock, creating a campaign that showcases both the precise cuts of the pants and the natural, hand-crafted variations that can (and should!) happen to top-quality denim, even when it’s still “brand new.”

Alaïa isn’t the only runway heavyweight coming hard for the denim arena this season. Chanel’s Matthieu Blazy has made the fabric an unexpected staple of his early tenure at the house, feeding it onto the runway and celebrity besties like Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman. (There’s even a limited-edition Chanel Denim Makeup collection, modeled by Lily-Rose Depp.) At Erdem in London, models Rikke Nora and Cara Schaddel appeared in low-riding skater jeans with silk shantung crop tops. And in downtown Manhattan, Maria McManus teamed with Agolde on a capsule collection of regenerative cotton jeans, jackets, and button-up shirts that debuted on her New York Fashion Week runway.

Alaïa’s denim collection is available for purchase starting today. May the odds—and the fabulous energy of fashion’s favorite “totally important designer”—be in your favor.
