Local high schoolers teach younger students about finances

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Some local high school students are taking part in a national non-profit campaign by teaching younger students.

April is financial literacy month, so a personal finance class from Topeka High School went to Whitson Elementary to teach first- and second-graders about saving, spending, and budgeting.

The visit is a part of “Jump-Start Teen Teach-In,” a national campaign encouraging high schoolers to educate their communities about money.

Because teaching gives them a new level of learning, different from *textbook learning.

“Getting to teach little ones is a little lower risk for them, but also gives them experience standing up and talking in front of people and making presentations too,” said Sheila Krohe, Topeka High School business and finance teacher.

“To see, like, big kids doing the same things that they, you know, hear about on the daily, and also, you know, get to see a little bit of what they might get to do in the future too,” Krohe continued.

As a fun activity, the elementary students were given supplies to decorate their own piggy banks to take home.
