Greece and the United States have officially formalized a new defense agreement under the US State Partnership Program (SPP), pairing the Hellenic Armed Forces with the Florida National Guard (FLNG).
The partnership was solidified during a high-level meeting in Athens between Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle. The discussion focused on deepening the strategic military relationship and the practical implementation of this long-term framework.
During the meeting, Minister Dendias expressed his appreciation to US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the continued mutual trust between the two nations. He also praised Ambassador Guilfoyle’s pivotal role in facilitating the agreement.
Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle said: “We are committed to making sure we have the best fighting forces in the world, ready to tackle the challenges of the future. Congratulations, Greece and Florida!”
Strategic objectives and interoperability
The pairing aims to enhance “interoperability”—the ability of different military forces to work together seamlessly. This is particularly timely as Greece prepares to field F-35 fighter aircraft and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters next year, hardware that aligns closely with Florida’s own air and ground components.
The partnership will focus on several critical operational areas:
- Joint Military Training: Recurring exercises and expert exchanges
- Domain Awareness: Enhancing maritime and air security
- Cyber Defense: Protecting critical infrastructure from digital threats
- Crisis Management: Joint planning for disaster response, specifically wildfire management and emergency coordination
