Greece is positioning itself as a regional education hub, with the number of foreign students choosing Greek public universities rising roughly 30% annually over the past three years, according to Study in Greece (SiG), the country’s official internationalization body.
Approximately 3,000 foreign students study in Greece each year, drawn largely by the expansion of English-language undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Fifteen such programs now operate exclusively for foreign students, with around 10 more in development. Students arrive primarily from Britain, the United States, Canada, the Balkans, and Middle Eastern countries including the UAE, Lebanon, and Jordan.
Greece ranks first in Europe – and sixth globally – for students enrolled in British transnational education programs, with 34,200 students participating in the 2024-25 academic year. Greek universities’ share of globally mobile students rose from 0.25% in 2019 to 0.40% in 2025. The launch of the country’s first private universities this academic year is expected to further accelerate growth.
