UGA FDSA to host spring fashion show | Arts & Culture

The Fashion Design Student Association (FDSA) at the University of Georgia will host its spring fashion show, “The Future Is Now,” on Friday, April 10, at the Georgia Museum of Art.

The event will begin with a cocktail hour at 6:15 p.m., followed by the fashion show at 7 p.m. According to a press release, the fashion show will feature student-designed and modeled collections.

Maggie Houlihan, head of public relations for FDSA, said the theme allows designers to interpret the future in different ways.

“It’s a broad enough theme to where designers are taking either a personal touch to it or a broad overall fix of what the theme is,” Houlihan said.

The cocktail hour will provide attendees the opportunity to look around and talk to the designers and other guests before transitioning into the structured runway show.

“The cocktail hour is going to be a little period of time to get your drinks or snacks and just kind of look around because not only is the fashion gonna be super cool, but our creative directors have seriously, put in the hours with the overall theme and the designs around in the area of the Georgia museum,” Houlihan said.

The fashion show will include a spaced-out first run of the designs, followed by a second run with models closer together. The final walk-through will feature designers walking with their models.

The event serves as an opportunity for student designers to showcase their work and build their portfolios. Approximately 20 to 30 designers created roughly 60 to 80 looks for the show, according to Houlihan.

“This is the very beginning of a lot of creators’ careers,” Houlihan said. “This is the best time ever to make that connection and to be able to build up, even, your resume as well if you have a creative calling.”

FDSA partners with local Athens businesses to support the event and promote community involvement, including K.A. Artist Shop and Kempt. Houlihan said the organization works together through these partnerships to boost both the organization and the local businesses.

Tickets can be bought through the FDSA Instagram. Student tickets are $10 and non-student tickets are $15.
