Apple permanently closing three US stores, here’s why

Apple has announced that it is closing three retail stores in the United States, including locations in Connecticut, Maryland, and California.

Apple closing these US stores

In a statement to MacRumors, Apple confirmed it is closing the following retail stores:

In the statement, Apple attributed the closures to “the departure of several retailers and declining conditions” at the malls in which the aforementioned stores are located.

At Apple, we are constantly striving to deliver exceptional service and great experiences for our customers. As we continue investing to expand and enhance our retail stores and offerings worldwide, we remain deliberate about evaluating our existing locations to ensure that we can meet our customers’ needs in the best way. Following the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Trumbull Mall, the Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations.

Trumbull Mall, for example, recently defaulted on over $150 million in loans amid ongoing struggles and business closures. Multiple businesses at Towson Town Center closed earlier this year, including Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, and Wockenfuss Candies.

The three Apple Stores are set to close in June, Apple says. All three are listed as “temporarily closed today” on their respective pages on Apple’s website, but are scheduled to re-open tomorrow before permanently closing.

Apple says that its employees at the Trumbull and Escondido stores will be able to “continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores.” Apple Towson Town Center employees, meanwhile, “will be eligible to apply for open roles at Apple in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.”

Our team members at Trumbull and North County will continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores. Towson employees will be eligible to apply for open roles at Apple in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. We look forward to continuing to serve customers at nearby stores and on Apple.com, the Apple Store app, and at Apple Authorized Resellers and Service Providers throughout the states.

Apple Towson Town Center became the first Apple Store location to unionize in June 2022. The Apple Store union is part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Apple continues to invest in its retail stores, despite these closures. The company has opened eleven new stores around the world in the past year, as well as upgraded and replaced 14 other locations. In the United States alone, Apple has opened two new stores and upgraded eight others.
