Conference showcases impact of JA of Northern Indiana’s financial literacy program

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – Junior Achievement (JA) of Northern Indiana held a conference on Thursday, showcasing the impact of its Financial Literacy for Indiana program, its partnership with local schools, and support from 3Rivers Federal Credit Union.

The conference brought together JA of Northern Indiana and 3Rivers Federal Credit Union leaders, legislative officials, and other community partners, who shared the importance of financial literacy for students and the workforce.

Indiana enacted legislation in 2023 requiring all high school seniors to complete a personal financial responsibility course as a graduation requirement, beginning with the Class of 2028.

JA of Northern Indiana says its Financial Literacy for Indiana program provides standards-aligned curriculum, real-world application, and dedicated support for educators.

“Financial literacy is no longer optional—it’s essential,” Lena Yarian, President of JA of Northern Indiana, said. “This moment represents a powerful intersection of education, policy, and community support.”

“Through partnerships like the one we have with 3Rivers Federal Credit Union and our other funders, we are able to meet schools where they need us and ensure more students graduate with the knowledge and confidence to manage their financial futures,” Yarian continues.

In addition to meeting Indiana’s graduation requirements, JA of Northern Indiana says it has partnered with Purdue University Fort Wayne to provide students with the opportunity to earn college credit for completing its Financial Literacy for Indiana program.

Students who meet academic proficiency standards are eligible to earn three college credits for BUS 26000: Personal Finance.
