PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — As World Music Therapy Week approaches, The Arc of Palm Beach County is highlighting how music is helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities build skills, express themselves and connect with others.
The annual observance is held April 10–15, brings attention to the role music therapy can play in supporting emotional, social and developmental growth. At The Arc, the program is a regular part of services offered to participants in its Adult Day Training programs.

“There is a joy in music that is unmatched, and our students look forward to our music therapist coming each week,” said Bairbre Flood, chief education and instruction officer at The Arc of Palm Beach County. “Clients with a wide range of abilities can participate in their own ways. Whether it’s through singing, beating a drum, or moving to the beat, it provides a meaningful outlet for self-expression and connection.”

During weekly sessions, a music therapist uses a mix of music, movement and interactive activities designed to support social, emotional and daily living skills. Participants are encouraged to engage at their own comfort level, creating an inclusive environment for individuals with varying abilities.
Leaders at The Arc say the program has shown meaningful benefits, including improved communication, stronger social interaction and better emotional regulation.
