IMF chief: Greece among the best-performing economies in the Eurozone

Greece is now ranked among the best economies in the Eurozone, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said at an event held ahead of the IMF Spring Meeting, according to a press release from the National Economy and Finance Ministry on Good Friday.

She particularly mentioned Greek National Economy and Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, noting that his election as president of the Eurogroup confirms that Greece’s credibility has been restored and its stronger presence at the core of developments in Europe. While referring to the crisis of the preceding decade and the difficult reforms that were carried out, Georgieva underlined that Greece’s progress is a clear example that political will, commitment and ability to do tough reforms “pays off” and can lead to a strong recovery.
In her statement, the head of the IMF highlighted the fact that countries such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal, which were caught up in a huge eurozone crisis, have managed to turn it around and are now among the best-performing economies in Europe:
“How do you do it? You buckle up, you do the tough stuff, you bring people with you. The fact that today, the president of the Eurozone, is the Greek finance minister makes that point,” she said.
