GREECE, N.Y. — The Town of Greece’s budget problems may have been worse than first reported.
Town Supervisor Jeff McCann’s office said Friday that the last administration overspent last year’s budget by $5 million. McCann also said there was nearly $1 million in unbudgeted legal expenses due to lawsuits the town has been fending off.
“I have been alarmed by the lack of transparency in the Town’s budget process – from the unavailability of public financial documents to the Town Board voting on budgets without any detail,” McCann said in a press release.
Previous Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said he finds the allegations hard to believe and that McCann’s office must not be taking into consideration all revenue streams.
The allegations come almost two months after the town eliminated a policy letting retired town managers cash out unused sick time. That cost more than $240,000 last year. The rule had been in place for about four years, and had cost the town more than $350,000.
Voters in Greece elected McCann as town supervisor last November after term limits prevented Reilich from seeking a fourth term this year.
