April meeting featured performances, poetry and a presentation on music’s therapeutic power

The Wooster Music Club’s April meeting featured musical performances, poetry readings and a presentation on the therapeutic uses of music.

The Wooster Music Club met April 7 at Wooster United Methodist Church, with co-President Kathy Helmuth welcoming members and guests.

After the attendants sang “This Is My Father’s World” and recited The Wooster Music Club Prayer, the performance segment of the meeting commenced.

Laura Tappan, accompanied by Myra Leeper on piano, sang “Reaching” by Carolyn Arends, “Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul,” words by Anne Steele and music by Kevin Twit, and “Since You’ve Asked” by Judy Collins.

Dennis Helmuth, M.D., Ph.D., gave a presentation on the therapeutic uses of music, which included PowerPoint and music videos. A Q-and-A discussion followed the presentation.

Louie Miller gave a reading of “Miracle on St. David’s Day” by Gillian Clarke. The poem tells the story of a long-mute patient who suddenly recited Wordsworth’s “The Daffodils” during one of Clarke’s poetry readings at a psychiatric hospital in the 1970s. Miller completed the performance segment of the meeting by reciting Wordsworth’s “The Daffodils.”

The Wooster Music Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from September through May, except for January and February. The meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and are held in Wesley Hall of the Wooster United Methodist Church. Guests are welcome to attend.
