LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – United ISD is exploring school closures and budget cuts as the district seeks ways to maintain financial stability.
Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz convened a focus group last night, bringing together parents, principals, educators and community members to discuss the district’s financial future.
According to the district, the focus group included various community members. The district said there was general support for cost-saving measures, including consolidating elementary schools.
The district emphasizes no decisions have been made. The board will discuss the feedback at a workshop next week.
UISD released this statement in full:
“As we continue to navigate important decisions impacting our school district, United ISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz convened a Focus Group to engage and hear directly from a diverse group of stakeholders representing our schools and community. During Thursday’s meeting on Thursday, April 9, district administration presented the current financial outlook and outlined strategic pathways toward long-term fiscal stability. The discussion was productive, with participants raising thoughtful questions and sharing valuable perspectives. The focus group included Board-appointed representatives, parents, principals, educators, and other community stakeholders. While perspectives varied, there was general support among participants for implementing district-wide staff right-sizing, cost-saving measures, and the consolidation of elementary schools. We thank all stakeholders who participated in this Superintendent’s Focus Group meeting. UISD would like to emphasize that no decisions have been made at this time. The feedback and input gathered will be further discussed during next week’s Board workshop.”
