‘Thrash’ (2026)
After the breakout appeal of Netflix’s pulpy shark thriller “Under Paris” a few years back, the streamer is clearly aiming to recapture that same lightning-in-a-bottle magic with its “Thrash.” It wasted no time stealing the No. 1 spot on Netflix, but its 38% Rotten Tomatoes score suggests your mileage may vary. Written and directed by Tommy Wirkola (who seriously impressed me with his campy Christmas horror movie “Violent Night”) the film once again throws people into the path of one of nature’s most fearsome predators. When a Category 5 hurricane tears through a coastal town, it leaves the streets submerged and swarming with ravenous sharks. “Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor leads as Lisa Fields, a heavily pregnant woman who becomes trapped in her car as floodwaters rise and sharks close in. Djimon Hounsou (“Rebel Moon,” “A Quiet Place: Day One”) co-stars as marine researcher Dale Edwards, who races against the clock to prevent the town’s residents from becoming prey.

‘Beast’ (2022)
I try to include a good mix of genres in these round-ups, but thrillers are dominating this weekend’s Top 10 list. While I haven’t yet seen “Beast,” its Rotten Tomatoes score (a solid 68% from critics and even more impressive 77% from audiences) has my curiosity piqued. Plus it has Idris Elba, and I’ll watch anything that man’s in. He stars as Dr. Nate Daniels, a recently widowed father who takes his daughters on a long-awaited trip to the South African game reserve where he first met their mother. He hopes the journey will bring them closer together, but it quickly spirals into a fight for survival when a fearsome predator eyes the family as its next prey. If you’re in the mood for a tight, no-frills survival thriller, “Beast” looks set to deliver a solid burst of adrenaline for your next movie night.
