Some bands follow trends. Others set their own course entirely. Steely Dan falls squarely into the latter.
When Donald Fagen and Walter Becker emerged in the early 1970s, they introduced a sound that didn’t quite fit any mold—blending rock, jazz, and something far more elusive.
That signature sound comes to the Athens Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, with The Expanding Man, An Original Tribute to the Music of Steely Dan and Beyond. The performance draws from a catalog celebrated for its precision, style, and unmistakable groove.
Beginning with Can’t Buy a Thrill in 1972, Steely Dan quickly distinguished themselves. Their songs paired rich harmonies with sharp, often cryptic lyrics, all wrapped in carefully constructed arrangements. As the decade unfolded, albums like Aja and Gaucho expanded that approach, incorporating deeper jazz influences and a heightened focus on studio craftsmanship.
Fagen and Becker moved away from the traditional model, choosing instead to work with a rotating group of musicians to achieve their vision. That approach resulted in recordings that remain instantly recognizable in songs such as “Do It Again,” “Reelin’ in the Years,” and “Peg.”
The Expanding Man brings that catalog into a live setting, balancing its signature sophistication with the energy of a live performance. The result is an evening that captures the character of Steely Dan while giving the music room to move—bold, layered, and fully alive.
