QD-OLED panel
So not all QD-OLED panels are the same, which is why we have certifications like VESA DisplayHDR True Black to indicate just how good they are when it comes to contrast, brightness, and color. This monitor doesn’t have one, but it does have a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 99% DCI P3 color, which means it’s going to make your games look super lifelike. The only place this monitor scales back is with its brightness, which isn’t that big of a deal if you’re using it in less well-lit rooms.
240Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium Pro
This monitor is designed to handle 240fps at QHD, which is great for fast-paced, competitive gaming, but also gives you a lot of headroom for other titles, too. What’s great to see here is the inclusion of FreeSync Premium Pro, which earns its ‘Pro’ status from its ability to improve HDR gaming performance, alongside all the features of FreeSync and FreeSync Premium. When it comes to OLEDs, the best gaming monitors are all packed with safeguards to protect against burn-in, which is caused by excessive heat buildup both in general and in specific spots on the monitor. This is where Samsung stands out from the crowd, in my opinion, as its designs are some of the sleekest around. With this monitor, you’ve got a metal, premium finish, with a small footbase and a streamlined profile. It’s the type of monitor that wouldn’t look out of place in more professional settings, or simply setups that are slightly more minimal. I’m a big fan myself, and I think it’s worth paying a slight premium for.
Things to consider
This is a great monitor, but if you’re going for something brighter, I’d recommend going for something with a VESA DisplayHDR 400 True Black certification. Where monitors tend to miss out on this certification is their minimum peak brightness levels, which have to be at least 400 nits. This LG 27GS93QE 27-inch Ultragear OLED Gaming Monitor would be my pick if you wanted something that ticks this box, but, as you can see, you have to pay a slight premium.
