Cast revealed for new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie

Days after director and star Andy Serkis said the role of Aragorn will be recast, it’s been announced who will fill those boots.

LAS VEGAS — Days after it was announced Viggo Mortensen would not return as Aragorn in the upcoming “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” we now know who will fill the boots of the Ranger of the North.

Warner Bros. revealed the cast for “The Hunt for Gollum,” set for release in December 2027, on Tuesday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Andy Serkis directs and stars as Gollum and Smeagol, a role he originated in Peter Jackson’s original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Also returning are Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Lee Pace as Thranduil.

The new additions to the cast announced Tuesday are Kate Winslet as Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard and Jamie Dornan as Strider — which is the name that Aragorn goes by when he first meets Frodo and his companions in “The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Dornan is known for his roles in “Belfast,” “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.”

In an interview earlier this month, Serkis kept details about Winslet’s role under wraps.

“We’ve got to keep it all back,” he told ScreenRant. “I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and it’s ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.”

Jackson is producing the new movie, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the original “Lord of the Rings” movies.
