Greek Government Proposes Extending Bank of Greece Governor Stournaras’ Term


ATHENS – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met on Wednesday at Maximos Mansion with the Bank of Greece (BoG) governor, Yannis Stournaras.

According to the announcement, taking into account the independence and the Statute of the Bank of Greece, the government proposes the renewal of the term of office of the current governor, Yannis Stournaras.

Stournaras: Proposal for a third term as Bank of Greece governor ‘is the greatest honor’

Commenting on the proposal that his leadership of the Bank of Greece be renewed for a third term, Yannis Stournaras on Wednesday made the following statement:

“The proposal by the prime minister and the government for a third consecutive term as governor of the Bank of Greece constitutes the highest honor for me and an expression of confidence in my person. I wish to provide my assurance that I will remain committed to the core mission of this significant institution – which in 2028 completes one hundred years of service, having played a primary and constructive role in economic developments – namely, the safeguarding of monetary stability and the soundness of the financial system, thereby contributing to the growth of the Greek economy for the benefit of the country and its citizens.”

In accordance with the provisions of the Statute of the Bank of Greece, the Bank’s General Council will convene in the coming days to formulate its recommendation to the Cabinet.
