Mavericks’ Anthony Davis to be re-assessed in 7-10 days as left calf strain recovery continues

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks won’t have Anthony Davis in the lineup for at least one more week as he recovers from a left calf strain. On Sunday, the Mavericks announced Davis was recently re-evaluated and will be “re-assessed in seven to 10 days.”

Davis has been out since he suffered the injury in an Oct. 29 game against the Indiana Pacers. Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers will be the ninth consecutive game Davis has missed. The Mavericks have a 1-7 record without him this season.

Davis has been pushing to return to the lineup for more than a week. He wanted to suit up in the Mavericks’ Nov. 8 game against the Washington Wizards. But the Mavericks’ medical team — with governor Patrick Dumont’s backing — decided that Davis shouldn’t return to the lineup until they are confident he’s not at risk of re-injuring himself, league sources said.

“He wants to play,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “He’s doing everything to get back. … I’m not trying to speak for him, but he wants to be out here trying to help us. This gives him seven to 10 days to get better. To get stronger. Hopefully, in seven to 10 days he’s back on the floor.”

The Mavericks are trying to avoid a scenario where Davis returns from injury too soon for a second time. He was recovering from an abdominal strain when Dallas traded for him in February. In his first game with the team on Feb. 8, he suffered an adductor strain that kept him out of the lineup for close to six weeks.

Davis has played in 16 games and missed 31 outings since the Mavericks traded Luka Dončić for him. On Tuesday, the Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison, the architect of that deal.

The Mavericks (3-10) have yet to beat a Western Conference opponent. They are 0-7 against teams in their own conference this season.
