Train services across Greece will come to a standstill on Tuesday, November 18, as railway workers will stage a 24-hour strike to protest what they describe as worsening working conditions and increasing safety risks.
The strike will run from 00:01 to 24:00, causing significant disruptions for passengers nationwide.
The strike is organized by the Hellenic Train Workers’ Union and the Panhellenic Traction Personnel Union, which say the sector is struggling with chronic delays, an aging fleet and persistent staff shortages.
According to the unions, these issues – combined with irregular work schedules, inadequate rest periods and cases of abrupt dismissals or transfers – have created an unsustainable working environment.
Workers are calling for immediate recruitment of trained personnel, proper adherence to work schedules and a comprehensive upgrade of the fleet.
Additional demands include improved station conditions, better route planning, stronger job protections, the reversal of recent dismissals and the timely completion of infrastructure projects and modern safety systems.
As required by law, the unions said they will appoint Security Personnel and Minimum Guaranteed Service Personnel for the duration of the strike. They also warned that further industrial action may follow if authorities do not address their concerns.
