There are plenty of new movies across the best streaming services this week, with Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu and more offering subscribers new additions to their respective libraries. And for those already in the seasonal spirit, you’ll be especially pleased with the slate of new Christmas movies this week.
For me, the most exciting new additions in the coming days are “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” on PVOD and “Train Dreams” on Netflix. These are two of the most acclaimed movies of 2025 to date, and I can’t wait to stream them for myself. Meanwhile, Netflix is also offering holiday rom-com “Champagne Problems” and Apple TV has “The Family Plan 2,” which takes the action-comedy bones of its predecessor and gives them a winter makeover.
‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’ (PVOD)
“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” has quickly become one of the indie darlings of 2025. Star Rose Byrne won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance award at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, and the psychological drama currently holds an impressive 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its strong reputation, it didn’t rule at the box office during its limited release in October, but its arrival on PVOD should broaden its audience.
Linda (Byrne) is a therapist reaching her breaking point. She’s trying to navigate her daughter’s eating disorder, an absent husband, and an increasingly strained relationship with her own therapist. From writer-director Mary Bronstein, “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” is a darkly comedic and highly compelling drama about a character driven to the brink and beyond.

‘Champagne Problems’ (Netflix)
Last week, Netflix declared the start of the holiday season when it dropped the first of its packed seasonal slate in the form of “A Merry Little Ex-Mas,” and now that the lid has been lifted, the Christmas-themed flicks are coming at a fast clip. Next up is “Champagne Problems,” a holiday rom-com that combines a snowy aesthetic with one of Europe’s most picturesque cities, Paris.
“Friday Night Lights” alumna Minka Kelly plays Sydney, an American businesswoman who travels to France around the holidays to secure the acquisition of a luxury champagne brand for her company. The family owners aren’t so sweet on the deal at first, but when Sydney starts to fall for the founder’s son, love and a little bit of drama bubble to the surface.

‘The Roses’ (Hulu)
The latest adaptation of Warren Alder’s “The War of the Roses” is creatively entitled “The Roses” and pairs Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a British couple who move to California as their marriage slowly falls apart. The new spin on the acclaimed novel isn’t quite as clever as it may seem, and the movie eventually succumbs to a bad case of slapstick syndrome, but the strength of its two leads keeps this one watchable until the (bitter) end.
Theo (Cumberbatch) is an architect working on a major project, while Ivy (Colman) is a talented chef who puts her dreams on hold so that her husband can shine. Addressing this balance, Theo gifts Ivy a restaurant, allowing her to follow her passion. However, when Ivy’s career blossoms, and Theo’s takes a sharp nosedive, their perfect marriage starts to crack.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ (HBO Max)
Billed as the final installment in the mainline “The Conjuring” series, “Last Rites” chronicles “the case that ended it all” for real-life paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). As far as grand finales go, I did not care for “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” finding it to be a bloated mess of horror cliches and pointless padding. However, it was a box office smash, so clearly other viewers disagreed with me.
If you haven’t quite got Spooky Season out of your system yet, its arrival on HBO Max is perfectly timed. Set in 1986, it sees the Warrens travel to Pennsylvania to help the Smurl family, who claim to be haunted by a sinister presence. All the usual hallmarks of “The Conjuring” franchise are here, and the stakes are raised with the Warrens’ daughter, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), caught up in the ghostly goings-on.

‘The Family Plan 2’ (Apple TV)
Apple TV’s “The Family Plan” was a streaming success back in 2023, so a sequel was quickly commissioned. It sees the entire Morgan family return, including Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan. This time, the Morgans are jetting off on a European adventure to celebrate the holidays. Naturally, in this unique family, nothing goes according to plan, as Dan (Whalberg), a former assassin, faces a mysterious figure with unfinished business.
“The Family Plan 2” adds Kit Harington to the cast list, and its snowy London setting will surely appeal to Apple TV subscribers over the festive season. Its action-comedy credentials should delight any family looking for a seasonal watch that isn’t about animated talking animals or that features Santa Claus. Personally, I’m just hoping the quality bar has been raised for the sequel.

‘Train Dreams’ (Netflix)
Netflix’s newest original drama probably won’t be a crowd-pleasing No. 1 hit, largely due to its slower pacing and meditative tone. Still, it currently ranks as one of the most well-reviewed Netflix movies of the year, scoring 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you can handle a movie that is as much a mood piece as a slice of cinematic entertainment, “Train Dreams” looks unmissable.
Set at the turn of the 20th century, “Train Dreams” focuses on logger Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton). His work, constructing railroads that stretch across the United States, causes him to spend significant time away from his wife (Felicity Jones) and young daughter, and all the while, he seeks to find his place in a world that is rapidly changing. Hailed for its stunning visuals and its emotional depth, “Train Dreams” could become a real hidden gem.
