Goalless draw ends fruitless campaign for Greece

Greece concluded its disappointing World Cup qualification campaign with a goalless draw against Belarus in Hungary on Tuesday.

The game was played in Zalaegerszeg, behind closed doors, in very cold conditions, but this is no excuse for the poor showing of Ivan Jovanovic’s players.

The first half was fairly quiet in terms of chances, the best one of which fell to Giorgos Masouras, but he squandered it hitting the woodwork from a close distance.

In the second half Greece was quite livelier and had a decent first 15 minutes, with some good passing and a few chances, before the substitutions upset the flow of the Greeks’ game.

Christos Tzolis was truly unlucky on the 77th when his swerving right-foot shot met the upright, keeping the game scoreless.

The game also marked the debut of 24-year-old Greek-Australian Nectarios Triadis.

Greece has finished the group with seven points from six games, in third position.

Its next competitive games will only come in 10 months’ time, in September 2026, at the UEFA Nations League.
