What’s In Your Fridge is where the Straight asks interesting creatives about their life-changing concerts, favourite albums, and, most importantly, what’s sitting beside the Heinz ketchup in their custom-made Big Chill Retropolitan 20.6-cubic-foot refrigerators.
I make music that comes out pretty poppy but with a punky/new wave/rock n roll flare! I was born in Vancouver, B.C. where I still live and make music.
My first concert was Tom Jones at either the Orpheum or the Vogue! ( I can’t remember which but it was definitely one or the other. I was 7 or something—super young.) My dad has always been a huge fan, so I grew up listening to him. I was obsessed with the song “What’s New Pussycat?” as I was really into cats (still am), so that was the main reason I went. To hear that one song. He did eventually play it but he also played a ton of other ones like “Sex Bomb” while women threw their panties on stage. I think my dad forgot about that element but I remember having a great time regardless. Was a super cool experience to see such a solid band perform in such a great room. I’ll never forget it.
This would have to be my first mosh pit experience—I went to go see Sum 41 play at the Croatian Cultural Centre when I was about 13. I was actually more blown away by Billy Talent, who opened the show. I loved their hard guitar sound with infectious melodies, and was in awe with Ian D’sa’s hair. I remember being dead sober but just living in the experience, not needing anything else. I think I crowd surfed for a minute? Definitely blew me away and made me want to do rock myself!
Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady This album is everything to me! I remember my dad gave me the CD and it took me a while to get into it. I remember the first time saying “The guitars were too quiet”, which is hilarious to me now. Once I got it I was hooked. The melodies are some of the best ever written, and the guitar parts are so perfect alongside them. Every song has a different feeling and there isn’t a dud on the whole thing. Huge inspiration.
B-52’s B-52’s This album is perfect to me. The vocals of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson are so powerful and melodic at the same time. I love all their music, but the stripped-down and raw energy of this album will always be my favourite of theirs.
David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars This album is a true masterpiece to me. From the hypnotizing “Five Years” to the absolute banger “Suffragette City” there is so much to take in. Another one that has no dud and I could listen to any time over and over.
Video of Ramones – I Don’t Want To Grow Up
The Ramones “I Don’t Want To Grow Up” I was gifted a copy of Ghost World when I was a teen that I became absolutely obsessed with. I then became really into the Ramones. Then I later on found out Daniel Clowes (writer and illustrator of Ghost World) did a music video for them—this is it! It’s the perfect combination of two things I love—couldn’t get much better than that.
Sambal hot sauce. This is the cousin of sriracha and I put it on everything! I like to get flavour blasted at every meal.
Babybel Cheese. My daughter is really into these mini cheese snacks. They’re mostly for her but I sneak one here and there.
Villa Sparina Gavi de Gavi white wine. It comes in a cute little bottle, and I’m a sucker for cute packaging.
Alex Little’s new single, “Sounds Like a Deal”, is out now.
