Christian rapper Canton Jones headlines Unity in the Community event at Veterans Museum Event Center, raising funds for student scholarships.
ATHENS, Ala. — A free community celebration centered on transformation, unity and faith brought together residents of all ages Sunday night at the Veterans Museum Event Center.
Unity in the Community, headlined by Christian rapper Canton Jones, raised scholarship funds for local high school seniors while showcasing the power of music to bridge divides. The event was co-hosted by MTM Educational Enrichment and supported by The Oasis: Christ Church of Athens, the City of Athens and Pleasant Grove CPCA Church.
All proceeds from the concert went directly toward scholarships for graduating seniors identified as “unsung heroes” — students who have overcome significant challenges to continue their education.
“We give it out each year to a graduating senior,” said Jan Matthew, CEO of MTM Educational Enrichment. “The mayor partnered with us to identify these unsung heroes based on essays they write about anything they had to overcome. When you create opportunities like this, especially around music, you’ll notice people from all cultures and all ages come together.”
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said community events like Unity in the Community are more important than ever.
“This is a time where I think it’s never been as important that we come together with transformation, unity and love,” Marks said. “It’s critical that people see we are united not only by faith but fellowship, by inclusion, diversity and the things that are really important in life.”
MTM Educational Enrichment serves underserved high school seniors through mentorship and scholarships. Sunday’s event featured multiple performances and drew a strong turnout, highlighting community support for local students and the organizations that serve them.
