One of my favorite fashion editor friends moved to Williamsburg from LA earlier this year, and she’s already (rightfully) nervous about how the wind off the river in our Brooklyn neighborhood delivers a very specific brand of New York cold. Discovering how many fashion people are secretly wearing this discreet and insanely warm foundation beneath their chic winter uniforms was like discovering the cheat code to winter in NYC. And of all of Uniqlo’s genuinely amazing Heattech options, this ultra-light cashmere-blend turtleneck that I discovered last winter is right at the top of my “most essential purchases to survive winter in New York” list.

What sets this thermal turtleneck apart is that it reads luxe, definitely not “technical base layer.” The fine knit refuses to add even a millimeter of bulk, and the cashmere blend gives it such a soft, elevated finish. The silhouette is sleek enough to layer flawlessly under everything from a wool blazer to a chunky knit. This is, quite frankly, the kind of thing fashion people stockpile in every single one of its eight colorways — brown is my favorite, and you know it’s good because it’s on a continual sold-out/restock loop. Set a notification, it’s worth it.
I can’t finish up here without telling you about my favorite review on the Uniqlo website, which simply reads: “My heart was kept warm, too.” I promise, this is truly life changing winter outfit infrastructure, and it outperforms its price tag ten times over. 11/10, would buy it again if it was 10 times the price.
