Stop & Shop will close its Toms River supermarket on Route 9 in the late spring of 2026, citing poor financial performance and a decision not to renew its lease.
The store at 2360 Route 9 was not meeting the company’s financial expectations, an official said.
“Stop & Shop has made the difficult decision not to renew the lease for our store located at 2360 Lakewood Road (also Route 9), in Toms River, New Jersey, as the store was not meeting financial expectations,” Daniel Wolk, external communications manager, said in an email to NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. “Stop & Shop intends to operate the store through the late spring of 2026.”
Wolk said all associates will be given the opportunity to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations.
The closing announcement came after a year of scrutiny over mislabeled and improperly handled meat at Ocean County locations, which led to $75,000 in fines and new oversight requirements.
An investigation revealed Stop & Shop systemically mislabeled and improperly handled beef and poultry products at all five of its stores across the county, local officials said.
Stop & Shop lists 47 locations in New Jersey on its website.
