As a powerful storm system named Adel continued to pound mostly western and northwestern Greece on Thursday, flooding streets and homes, and causing landslides and road closures, the weather service EMY said in an updated alert that the rain will affect most parts of the country in the next 48 hours.
Starting this afternoon, thunderstorms and local hail is forecast in Epirus, Aitolia-Akarnania, the western and southern Peloponnese, eastern Macedonia, Thrace and in the regional units of Halkidiki, Serres, Kilkis and Thessaloniki.
On Friday heavy rains and storms will spread to northern Greece, the islands of the Eastern Aegean from noon, and the Dodecanese from the evening.
The General Secretariat of Civil Protection will issue a “Red code” readiness status today for the North Aegean Region and the Dodecanese, putting local authorities on hightened alert.The same state of readiness has been announced in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, Peloponnese, Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Meanwhile, in the Tzoumerka mountain range of Epirus, new landslides were recorded on Thursday in various settlements, with the largest in the village of Agnanta. In a photo posted on Facebook by the regional governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, a large part of the ground has collapsed, creating a gaping cliff just a few meters from the houses.
In the village of Potamos, in eastern Corfu, municipal crews’ overnight effort to clean the riverbed from debris managed to reduce the water levels. The road network in the center of the island has collapsed in several parts and work is ongoing to reopen the roads.
Meanwhile, power grid operator DEDDHE said crews are working to restore power in some areas of Corfu while damage to the water supply network from fallen trees is recorded in parts of the areas of Moraitika, Kompitsi, Liapades, Kanalia, Potamos, Petalia.
