Greece has climbed to the top of the list of the world’s best retirement destinations this year for the first time, displacing traditional destinations such as Portugal and Spain, as it offers an unbeatable package for those looking for quality of life, good healthcare and low living costs after work.
“Greece’s rise to the top spot marks a shift in the landscape of retirement markets in Europe,” says Jennifer Stevens, director of International Living, which compiles the annual Global Retirement Index: “For years, Portugal and Spain have been the front-runners, but recent changes to Golden Visas and rising costs are pushing retirees to look elsewhere. Greece now offers what many are looking for: a beautiful, welcoming and affordable European base with affordable accommodation options and a lifestyle that gives a sense of wealth in every way.”
This historic first is mainly due to this country’s excellent performance in three crucial categories for retirees: the irresistible climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year, quality of life and affordable cost of living. Greece’s Golden Visa program, which grants a residence permit to third-country nationals from outside the EU, is one of the most affordable in Europe.
The country also scored highly in climate, healthcare and housing, where a modest two-bedroom house costs 600-800 euros per month, as reported. As the International Living correspondent in Corfu notes, island life encourages connection with nature: hiking in the winter, kayaking in the summer, and adopting the famous “siga-siga” (i.e. slowly) pace. Cost of living can be about a third lower than in North American cities, with a couple living comfortably on €2,900-3,000/month, covering all their expenses. Private healthcare is also consistently good and affordable, with a couple paying around €250/month for private insurance.
