MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Science N Girls is a program that is hosted by both the Sibley Nature Center and Coterra, where local scientists share their experiences in their respective fields with students. The goal for the program is to spark interest in science for young women in the Permian Basin, showing them different avenues for career paths.
Science N Girls is specifically targeted for young girls from the 4th to 6th grade. During this program, drone operators, geologists, and other scientists have made time to do activities with students.
Students who participated in the program tell us they enjoy seeing when scientists come in and let them know that they can do the same thing as men.
During Tuesday’s session, Geologist Jennifer Reeves shared with students how she wanted to become a geologist at a young age from playing with rocks.
Reeves had activities for students, such as draining water from a sponge with a dropper to demonstrate how oil is collected from the ground. Another activity that took place was Reeves having three funnels filled with sand, gravel, and rock on top of mason jars. As Reeves poured water down each funnel, she explained to students why the one filled with rocks filled up first.
“I take advantage of the opportunity to be able to share that with young girls,” Geologist Jennifer Reeves said. “So that they can recognize the differences between boys and girls and that they, you know, how to think differently about things to be able to be successful in that environment.”
If you are interested in sending your daughter to Girls N Science, the Sibley Nature Center will be holding its final session for the fall next Tuesday, December 9th, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. This event is open to the public for girls in the fourth through sixth grades.
