Unemployment in Greece Steadily Dropping, Still Remains High


According to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Greece’s unemployment rate in October remained steady at 8.6%, having decreased by just over one percentage point compared to the same month last year (9.7%).

These numbers are consistent with the beginning of the Greek economic crisis, 17 years ago. Unemployment in Greece had reached a record high of 27.8% in October 2013.

The number of unemployed persons in October 2025 was estimated at 411,369a decrease of 50,326 (-10.9%) compared to the same month last year, and a slight increase of 1,000 compared to September of this year.

Meanwhile the number of employed persons in Greece for October 2025 is 4,347,352. This number is slightly up by 44,904 persons compared to October 2024 (+1%), and up by 20,586 (+0.5%) compared to September 2025.

ELSTAT also gave figures on the number of persons that are “outside of the workforce,” i.e. persons under 75 years old who are also not officially employed.

This number is estimated at 2,982,942, a figure 0.8% lower than October 2024, and also down by 0.8% compared to September 2025. The number of persons outside of the workforce in 2020 was 3,334,947.

Youth unemployment remains high in Greece. Unemployment for those aged 15 to 24 is still high, at 18.8%more than double the current national average. This percentage is still much lower than the 38.9% for the same age group in 2020.

Unemployment for women is also in double digits, and higher than the national average, at 11% (22.1% in 2020), while unemployment for men stands significantly lower, at 6.7% (14.4% in 2020).
