Diplomatic sources say the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken “all necessary actions” after a European Commission informational booklet mistakenly depicted the eastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands in Turkey’s color rather than Greece’s.
The issue concerns the latest edition of the Commission’s annual handbook “Discovering Europe.”
Following instructions from Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, Greece’s Permanent Representation to the EU lodged a strong protest with the Commission. The complaint was directed to Dana Spinant, the Director-General of Communication, who apologized and assured Greece that the error would not be repeated, according to the same sources.
The digital version of the booklet has already been removed from the Commission’s website, and procedures have begun to withdraw printed copies from distribution points. After corrections are made, the updated handbook will be reposted online, diplomatic sources noted.
Two days earlier, PASOK MEP Giannis Maniatis highlighted the controversial map in a social media post. He also submitted a formal question to the Commission seeking explanations, correction of the error, and assurances that similar incidents will not occur in the future.
