The music world was stunned this week by the heartbreaking news that Justin Baren, a former teen rock star with The Redwalls, has died.
He was 40.
Baren helped form The Redwalls in 2001 while he was still in high school. He was the bassist in the group alongside his brother, vocalist and guitarist Logan Baren, and drummer Ben Greeno.
The band announced his death on its social media page.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our friend, brother, and bandmate, Justin Baren,” the statement on Instagram read. “Justin was an essential part of The Redwalls. His energy, intuition, and raw musicality helped shape who we were. Not just as a band, but as a group of kids trying to make something meaningful together.
“The cause of Justin’s passing has not been officially determined,” the statement added. “He will be deeply missed, and his memory will be a blessing. We’re grateful for the years, the music, and all the memories we shared.”
Followers of the band’s page were quick to reply with love.
“Damn I hate reading this!!” one person replied. “So much talent gone so soon. I know how much you loved your little bro Logan, so sorry for your loss buddy! The Redwalls have lived in my shop speakers daily for 20 years. Justin’s memory will continue to be hoored every day as I play his music loud and proud!”
“I’m so sorry!” another wrote. “This guy had great influence in my teenager years. Hugs from Brazil. RIP Justin!”
There were plenty more posts like that and you can see them all here along with the band’s post about his death.
The Redwalls eventually worked their way into an opening gig for Oasis in the United Kingdom and the United States back in 2005. The band put out three albums – “Universal Blues,” in 2003, “De Nova” in 2005 and “The Redwalls” in 2007.
“As a singer, songwriter, and bass guitarist, he brought unmistakable energy and personality to every performance,” his obituary, which the band directed fans to, read. “Audiences connected with his presence onstage and his deep love for music.
“Music remained central throughout Justin’s life,” the obituary added. “He continued to write, record, and collaborate, and had recently been working to bring previously unheard recordings to release. His passion, creativity, and generous spirit will be remembered by his family, his bandmates, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.”
