Cal State Fullerton’s efforts to strengthen pathways for transfer students and successful science, technology, engineering and math programs to prepare graduates for STEM careers received a multi-million-dollar unrestricted boost from the Samueli Foundation in late November.
The Corona del Mar-based Samueli Foundation’s $24 million gift aims to expand workforce development opportunities for students at six Orange County college campuses.
CSUF, Fullerton College, Irvine Valley College and Orange Coast College received a total of $12 million from the Samueli Foundation to increase the number of STEM students successfully transferring from community colleges to four-year universities and increase the STEM graduation rate at Cal State Fullerton. Each school will receive $3 million.
“Cal State Fullerton is grateful for this investment, which will open doors for more students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Cal State Fullerton President Ronald Rochon. “This support strengthens our collaboration with local community college partners and creates stronger pathways to careers that will drive innovation and power the future of Orange County.”
The funding allows the selected campuses to expand access to research, advising, peer mentorship and internships by targeting students who might otherwise lack the financial means to complete STEM degrees and pursue STEM careers. In addition, these four institutions are forming the Orange County STEM Regional Collaboration, with a three-year, $4 million funding initiative that CSUF will lead.
Workforce development programs at Golden West College, and Saddleback College also received funding for skills academies, paid internships, and expansion of high-demand fields such as nursing.
Cal State Fullerton will support its transfer initiatives, specifically among low-income students and those without prior access to research or internships. Among the many initiatives made possible or expanded by this funding, highlights include hiring of two dedicated full-time STEM transfer advisors embedded in the College of Engineering & Computer Science and College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, supporting current students and collaborating with community colleges, and the expansion of research placements and increased stipends to meet minimum wage, ensuring financial barriers do not limit participation.
