MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – Kansas State University’s Bakery Science Club hosted its annual holiday bake sale Wednesday.
“It’s an opportunity for the students to get a chance to make a lot of product, get exposure to production as well as to the sales,” club advisor Aaron Clanton said.
Club members say a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make the sale happen.
“There’s definitely a lot of planning that goes into the sale,” club member Abigail Reid said. “Trying to coordinate, when are we going to make everything, scaling out all the ingredients, making sure that we get out of the lab at a reasonable time at night. And that we’re still having fun while doing stuff.”
“I learned that there is a lot more to bakery sales than you would think,” club member Chase Nagel said. “Especially when trying to get ingredient lists around and figure out pricing for different things and how much ingredients it took and the labor it took.”
Funds raised from the sale will go towards the club’s trip for baking conference next year.
“The nice thing about this particular conference is it’s reasonably small but it gives the opportunity for each of the students to network with industry folks,” Clanton said.
“Going to these conferences gives us a chance to meet with a lot of industry professionals, sometimes even four years before we enter the industry,” Nagel said. “So it really gives us a chance to put our foot in the door.”
The club says community support is crucial.
“It means a lot, I mean we wouldn’t be able to kind of do all of the things that we do,” Reid said. “We wouldn’t be able to go on trips, we wouldn’t be able to have the experience of doing large scale production without somebody to come eat it and fund our efforts so it means a lot.”
