Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance (NYSE:ARI) shareholders have earned a 7.4% CAGR over the last three years


Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. We regret to report that long term Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance, Inc. (NYSE:ARI) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 14% in three years, versus a market return of about 83%.

It’s worthwhile assessing if the company’s economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let’s do just that.

But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It’s fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance, it has a TSR of 24% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

It’s good to see that Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 21% in the last twelve months. That’s including the dividend. That’s better than the annualised return of 9% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.
