Casper kids are expanding their horizons at the Science Zone. Your Wyoming Link takes you to this week’s Computer Science STEAM night where kids are learning, teaching, and having fun.
Casper kids are expanding their horizons at the Science Zone. Every Thursday from 4 to 6pm the Science Zone gets packed with kids and parents there to enjoy the free weekly Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics or STEAM night events hosted by Serve Wyoming AmeriCorps.
This Thursday focused on Computer Science. Kids got to try out everything from 3D printing to robotics to coding a video game. Other nights provide opportunities for kids to explore all sorts of different sciences.
And some of the kids who learn at the Science Zone even end up teaching a little, like Rhys who is showing off his knowledge of robotics.
Rhys said, “I just like working with the computer and stuff like that,” when Your Wyoming Link asked how he came to focus on robotics during his time at the Science Zone.
With guidance from AmeriCorps volunteers STEAM nights have access to the tools that spark kids’ imagination, inspiring life-long passions. The free dinner and prizes are also a plus.
This Thursday was a special night because it’s the culmination of a $15,000 Charter/Spectrum technology grant. This grant gave educators at the Science Zone the opportunity to buy new resources for the kids.
“There’s a lot we’ve been able to get, and it expands a lot of opportunities,” said Science Zone Technology Program Coordinator Jess McIntyre. “For example, when we started, we only had two robotics kits for about six kids and zero of the younger kid ones. Now we have ten of each. So, we’re able to provide more variety for more kids with hands on experience. We’re able to provide for more ages.”
The grant also provided new TVs, laptops, and more all opening new doors for coding, animation and all sorts of other technology learning.
