Original storytelling shines in 2025’s top films, with diverse genres and surprising depth. #k5evening
SEATTLE — While box office charts were dominated by sequels, remakes and franchise reboots this year, we found the most memorable films of 2025 came from original storytelling packed with surprises and standout performances.
Here are the Top 5 movies of the year.

Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” claims the No. 5 spot, offering viewers a supernatural ride featuring vampires and Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers. But the film’s significance extends beyond its entertainment value.
“The reason it’s probably the most talked about movie of the year lies in the historic subtext,” we said.
“Sinners” is currently streaming on HBO Max.

At No. 4, documentary “Prime Minister” follows New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern through a turbulent term as a young mother whose compassionate crisis leadership captivated global audiences.
“That there are politicians of this caliber anywhere in the world gives us all hope,” we noted. The documentary is also available on HBO Max.

“Weapons” earned the No. 3 position, surprising viewers who expected a straightforward horror film about children missing from Julia Garner’s classroom.
“The less you know the better,” we advised. “There’s no way you’ll be able to anticipate the twists and turns coming.”
The film is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Timothy Chalamet stars in “Marty Supreme,” the year’s second-best film, which defies expectations about what a table tennis movie can deliver.
“This is not your typical sports flick,” we said, describing it as a story about self-belief. Though Chalamet’s character may initially seem arrogant and unlikeable, “chances are you’ll be cheering for him by the end.”
“Marty Supreme” opens in theaters on Christmas Eve.

Topping the list is “One Battle After Another,” a Paul Thomas Anderson film that unpredictably shifts between action, comedy and political thriller while echoing contemporary issues.
“The final 20 minutes are guaranteed to have you glued to your seat,” we promised.
“One Battle After Another” begins streaming on HBO Max Friday.
