At the very least, the Warriors broke a pattern on Thursday night in Phoenix. In the two previous games, both coming after the return of star guard Stephen Curry from a quad contusion that had kept him out for more than a week, the team had wasted huge nights from Curry–first 39 points in a loss to Minnesota, followed by 48 points in a loss to Portland.
Against the Suns, Curry was just 3-for-13 from the field and notched a mere 15 points. The Warriors lost, 99-98, but at least this time, they did not let a vintage Curry performance go to waste.
As it stands, Golden State has dropped to 13-15, and have dropped to 4-9 since a 9-6 start to the season. The team has cycled through starting lineups. has been unable to recapture the magic it found after trading for Jimmy Butler (who had 31 points against Phoenix) last season and appears to have completely flummoxed coach Steve Kerr.
Stephen Curry: Warriors ‘Obviously Not a Good Team’
Curry himself took the Bill Parcells approach in summing up the Warriors at this point–you are what your record says you ware. And the Warriors do not have a very good record right now.
“There’s moments where we have been playing well enough and then we have a bad three minutes and teams take advantage of it,” a morose Curry said on Thursday night. “We’ve gotten—we ran into some nights where teams have shot it way above their averages. That’s how it goes in the league.
“If you’re a good team, you’re able to overcome all of that. We’re obviously not a good team right now because of what our record says and the fact that we have found ourselves in these kinds of positions.”
Warriors Will Play 13 of 17 at Home
Curry was not entirely gloomy, though. He did lighten up his outlook with the notion that the Warriors are still only 28 games into the season and, perhaps, can benefit from the fact that they’re dealing with hard times early in the year, rather than later.
The Warriors have a bizarre schedule this season that has seen them play just 11 games at home and 17 on the road–but that will switch drastically in the next month, with 13 of the next 17 games coming at Chase Center.
Playing at home will help. But Curry wants to see more from his team.
“I do like the fact that it’s challenging us and giving us a sense of urgency,” he said. “Some years you learn these lessons while you’re winning and it catches up to you. But if we are going to do anything relevant this year, feeling this pain right now and searching a little bit could be a good thing. If we do something about. So, that’s the moment we’re in right now.”
